What's more interesting is how the image invokes the show's theme of consciousness expansion (an idea explored in “The Western Book of the Dead,” which S2E1 was named after). I don't think we should focus too much on the specific colors of Ray's aura, though. It's as if Ray has been absorbed by the dark forest. When his mom calls, Chad looks away, then when he turns back to his dad, all he can see is leaves and blackness. The image seems pertinent to the later scene where Ray says goodbye to his son.
