The shaman must become sick to understand sickness. This happens so the shaman can venture to its depths to bring back vital information for the sick, and the tribeĢ. The shaman crosses over to the underworld. S/he undergoes a type of sickness that pushes her or him to the brink of death. This process is important to the young shaman.
The wounded healer is an archetype for a shamanic trail and journey. The opening titles suggests that this world is built with thoughts, filling the characters' heads with the features of the landscape (factories, highways, trees, etc.), and throughout the series, the dissolves reinforce their ontological connection to the landscape by superimposing aerial shots over their faces. The environment of a dream is shaped by the dreamer's consciousness. “You own the world,” sings Leonard Cohen in the season's theme song.
What's more interesting is how the image invokes the show's theme of consciousness expansion (an idea explored in “The Western Book of the Dead,” which S2E1 was named after). I don't think we should focus too much on the specific colors of Ray's aura, though. It's as if Ray has been absorbed by the dark forest. When his mom calls, Chad looks away, then when he turns back to his dad, all he can see is leaves and blackness. The image seems pertinent to the later scene where Ray says goodbye to his son.
